From the village of Washington (today a medium-sized town), located between Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Durham in the north of England. George Washington's earliest recorded ancestor was a nobleman called William de Hertburne, who changed his name to William de Wessyngton after he was given a manor in the village. The manor still survives.
