Windows 7 promotes Windows Live Essentials, so Windows Live Movie Maker is a version to consider. However, it is a 'striped-down' version of Windows Movie Maker v2.6.
Windows Movie Maker v2.6 has more functions/features than the new Windows Live Movie Maker. In the 2.6 version, you can see the actual video/audio tracks, take a 'Picture from the Preview', change Media Duration Defaults, etc.
But, those features are NOT offered in the Windows Live version, which incorporates a "Ribbon-View" similar to the Microsoft Office 7. There are fewer transitions and effects and less functionality overall in comparison to earlier versions.
Anyhow, this is what I did... I downloaded and installed Windows Live Movie Maker as a 'Backup' to my Vista Movie Maker (v2.6). That way if something goes wrong with one version, I can always use the other.

Windows Movie Maker is the easiest to use. It is a program for beginners or novice users. Other more sophisticated software applications out there offer more, but are harder to learn. Unless you want to make a career out of video editing and use such software, stick to Windows Movie Maker... it is the easiest to use.
