Big Sioux river and the Missouri river. However, an 1877 flood shifted the path of the Missouri river, causing a portion of Iowa to be located west of the new path of the Missouri River. This portion of Iowa is now called Carter Lake, Iowa and is just east of Omaha, Nebraska.
