The carbon cycle has moved carbon in and out of the atmosphere for millions of years, supporting the natural greenhouse effect of the planet, which keeps the earth warm.

Man's recent (over 250 years) burning of fossil fuels has released a lot of carbon that had been hidden underground for millions of years. This is overloading the carbon cycle. Man also cut down the great forests of the world that used to absorb carbon dioxide and store the carbon. Half the weight of a tree is carbon.

This means that there is much more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere than there ever was (394 ppm, parts per million, instead of the long standing levels of 270 ppm). All this additional greenhouse gas captures more of the sun's warmth and is causing an accelerated greenhouse effect, which produces global warming.

Does global warming have an effect on volcanos?

No, Global warming has no effect on volcanoes. It's the other way round. Volcanoes can increase global warming slightly if the emit carbon dioxide. And they can reduce global warming for a while if their dust and ash block out and reflect the sun's rays.

How does global warming cause long-term changes in the global temperature?

Global warming is long term changes - increases - in the global temperature. The increases in the global temperature are being caused by the accelerated greenhouse effect. That is, more greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (methane, but largely carbon dioxide from our burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas) capture more of the sun's heat and warm the atmosphere. This extra warming is global warming.

What environmental issue is related to the greenhouse effect?

Global Warming... Global Warming is caused by Carbon Dioxide being trapped in the Earth's atmosphere. AKA the greenhouse effect.

How do plants increase global warming?

Plants don't increase global warming. In fact, they do the opposite.Plants, trees and all vegetation reduce the effect of global warming by removing from the atmosphere these gases like carbon dioxide and storing the carbon in their trunks and branches. They help to reduce global warming.

What gases cause global warming and how?

Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane, mostly) cause global warming by increasing their levels in the atmosphere. This turns the benign greenhouse effect into an accelerated greenhouse effect which is causing global warming.

Global warm effect?

global warming an increase average temperature of the earth's atmosphere it can effect increase that causes climatic changes.

What name is given to warming of the earth due to increased levels of carbon dioxide?

The warming of the earth due to increased levels of carbon dioxide is called the Greenhouse effect. Global warming is a result of the greenhouse effect.

An increase in the levels of carbon dioxide is the biggest contributor to what?

The greenhouse effect - Global warming.

Are plants reducing global warming?

Plants reduce carbon dioxide, because they absorb carbon and release oxygen. Yes, they help reduce global warming, because excess carbon dioxide emissions increase the green house effect and global warming. Plants in total consume a small percentage of the carbon dioxide, a known minor contributor to global warming. The bottom line is that plants are a small carbon sink.

What is carbon dioxide in the greenhouse effect?

Carbon dioxide is the main greenhouse gas. It also causes global warming.

Too much of which gas in the atmosphere is causing global warming?

Too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is causing global warming. The natural carbon cycle is overwhelmed and can't move out all the extra gas. The extra gas is turning the natural greenhouse effect into an accelerated greenhouse effect, which is causing global warming.

What is the effect of having more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

It results in more global warming (due to the greenhouse effect).
