If you are talking about vanilla Freelancer (unmodded), just as Edison Trent says it, "Now... if I could just get a Sidewinder Fang..." your ship lands on Planet Manhattan and the game becomes freeplay. All that you can do is apply for missions, do some more exploring of systems that were not covered during the story mode and find wrecks, elite weapons, ships and bases with high-powered equipment. The story mode only covers around 20% of available systems and probably the same amount in ships and equipment. You could even opt to go bad and attack the good guys, just enough to befriend pirates and smugglers and land on their bases to see what they might have for sale.
