Iwant to know which tool would help me measure how different colors absorb the energy in sunlight ?
The international unit for energy is the joule, equal to the watt-second. Electric meters, however, are usually calibrated to measure kilowatt-hours (equal to 3.6 million watt-seconds).

Photon Energy E=hf = hc/w thus wavelength w= hc/E or the wavelength is hc divided by the energy of the photon or w= .2 e-24 Joule meter/Photon Energy.
A meter.
An electric meter or energy meter is used now a days.
Electric energy is measure in Units which are kilowatt-hours. Your electricity meter records the usage in Units over the billing period. The meter measures the true power and not the volts times the amps.
The function of the electric meter is to inform the power company how much electricity you have used - so they know how much to charge you !AnswerWhat is colloquially known as an 'electric meter', or 'electricity meter', is correctly termed an energy meter. As the name implies, an energy meter is used to measure the amount of energy (not'electricity', which is not a quantity!) purchased from the electricity supply company for the purpose of billing its customers. This energy is measured in units called kilowatt hours (kW.h) and, for this reason, energy meters are sometimes referred to as 'kilowatt hour meters' or 'watt hour meters'.
Smart meter is usually an electrical meter that records consumption of electric energy and communicates the electric usage information to the utility services for billing and monitoring purposes. Smart meter comes with two-way communication between the central system and the meter. Smart meters can gather data for remote reporting which is not possible with the ordinary home energy monitors. Simply by checking out the meter readings on the meter you can get to know how much of energy used for your home. It is also possible to save money on your energy bills by comparing the rates of the energy service providers.

An electricity meter
To control how much energy you use, and therefore have to pay for. Note that it costs money to produce this energy in the first place.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 states that electric meters "Smart Meters" are to be made available to those who want it. However, it is not a mandate. States do not outlaw it, but there are some cities, particularly in California that ban the Smart Meter.
