Carbon dioxide is a powerful greenhouse gas which is contributing to the accelerated greenhouse effect. Burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas (which we do in industry, vehicles and generating electricity) releases long hidden carbon dioxide that has been out of the picture for millions of years. This extra CO2 is building up in the atmosphere. The carbon cycle cannot remove this extra greenhouse gas, so it is trapping more and more heat. This is causing global warming and hence climate change, and that is why there is environmental concern.
