Only a 555 can replace a 555, there is no equivalent. 555s are made by many companies, each with their own prefixes and suffixes, but all are 555s.
A pulse width modulated signal would be very useful in a switching power supply. This is but one example. Note, however, that there are better examples than the 555 for use in a switching power supply.
You can use it in both analog and digital circuits but it is considered as a digital device.
The 8-pin 555 timer must be one of the most useful ICs ever made and it is used in many projects. With just a few external components it can be used to build many circuits, not all of them involve timing!A popular version is the NE555 and this is suitable in most cases where a '555 timer' is specified. The 556 is a dual version of the 555 housed in a 14-pin package, the two timers (A and B) share the same power supply pins. The circuit diagrams on this page show a 555, but they could all be adapted to use one half of a 556.Low power versions of the 555 are made, such as the ICM7555, but these should only be used when specified (to increase battery life) because their maximum output current of about 20mA (with a 9V supply) is too low for many standard 555 circuits. The ICM7555 has the same pin arrangement as a standard 555.The circuit symbol for a 555 (and 556) is a box with the pins arranged to suit the circuit diagram: for example 555 pin 8 at the top for the +Vs supply, 555 pin 3 output on the right. Usually just the pin numbers are used and they are not labelled with their function. The 555 and 556 can be used with a supply voltage (Vs) in the range 4.5 to 15V (18V absolute maximum).Standard 555 and 556 ICs create a significant 'glitch' on the supply when their output changes state. This is rarely a problem in simple circuits with no other ICs, but in more complex circuits a smoothing capacitor (eg 100µF) should be connected across the +Vs and 0V supply near the 555 or 556.Source: http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/555timer.htm
A 555 timer basically consists of: # A voltage divider circuit, # Two comparators, # An SR flip-flop, and # Two (bipolar) transistors: one NPN (discharge) and one PNP (reset), as can be seen in its block diagram. The voltage divider consists of three 5Kohm resistors, so that we get (1/3)Vcc and (2/3)Vcc; we use these voltages as references for the comparators. The three 5K resistors, along with IC's main applications being in timer and multi-vibrator circuits, give it the name 555 timer.
555 an IC which can be used for many applications and one of the application is astable multivibrator. For many applications we use IC 555 because its cost effective and have lot of features. The main difference is astable multivibrator switches from one state to another state automatically i.e when a pulse is given to astable multivibrator, it immediately switches to high state and remains for certain time and switches back to low state. In 555timer you can decide your own application.

The number 555-555-5555 is not a good number. Some people use it to mask their actual number so the person being called cannot identify them.
555-123 = 432
We use the IC1 555 in LPG gas detector to detect the leaking gases.

Use the phone at the Motel Office to order a pizza for Bucky Lucas. Dial 555-7383 (555-PETE) and then go outside to take the pizza to his room.
The front end estimate is 600. But estimating a single number, in isolation and without context, is a complete waste of time.If I had to add 555 to 1 trillion, I would estimate it as 0. If I had to add 555 to 0.0000000001, I would use the number as given - not use an estimate.
In the tabloid magazine is an ad for Papa Pete's Pizza. Use the phone in the motel office to call 555-7383 (555-PETE), and order a pizza for room 4-B (Bucky Lucas). When the driver arrives, offer to deliver it yourself.
The head is one component of the body.
The letters can be dialed as numbers on the phone : 555-7383. Use the phone at the Motel Office to call 555-PETE (555-7383). Order a pizza for room 4-B, where Bucky Lucas is hiding out. Take the pizza to him to get a stamp for your Reality Show application.
Police codes vary from one police department to another, so what 555 means in one area would not necessarily be the same as another area. Some police departments may not use 555 as one of their codes.
