Streptomyces erythreus naturally produces macrolide antibiotics. It must have a protection mechanism so its protein does not attack itself. This mechanism is most commonly methylation of the 23S rRNA target, and an efflux pump for macrolides.

The mechanism of resistance in MLS Staphylococci is the same as Strep erythreus. It is more likely the bacteria shared a simple gene that codes for these resistance mechanisms rather than staph naturally becoming resistant for no competitive reason.
