North America is not a country. Much as the US would like everyone to believe that they are the only residents of North America, Mexico, Canada, Guatemala and others are part of North America.
The real problem is that the US does not have a name for their country, just a vague description- United States of America. Canada could easily be the united provinces of North America and Mexico could claim to also be the united states of America. However, both of those countries have proper names, so they don't claim to be the entire continent.

"North America" is not a country - it is a continent composed of 23 countries and territories, both sovereign or dependent.
