Virtually nothing is known about St. Valentine except that he was a priest, possibly a bishop, and that he suffered martyrdom in Rome, probably in the 3rd century. Because of this lack of factual information, his feast day was removed from the Calendar of Saints in 1969. However, his cult has not been suppressed so veneration is still allowed.
