The south pole is the farthest point south on Earth's surface.
Depending on your reference:

  • Magnetic South Pole is where the south pole part of a magnetic compass points
  • Geographic or Terrestrial South Pole is the southern point where the Earth's axis of rotation meets its surface.

The South Pole, referred to technically as either the Geographic South Pole or the Terrestrial South Pole, is the point on the Earth that's furthest south. Both the South and North Poles, geographically speaking, are where a body's rotational axis passes through its surface. These terms can be applied to any spherical body in space, including planets, suns and moons. Because asteroids and comets are generally not rounded, these terms are rarely applied to them.

As an added note, Geographic and Magnetic South are, at least in the case of Earth, located at different positions. The planet's magnetic poles intersects with its surface as with the Geographic Poles, but the axis is based on the geomagnetic field lines. To complicate this slightly more, the Geomagnetic Poles are also located separately from Geographic and Magnetic Poles. Any cosmic body that generates a magnetic field has both Geographic and Geomagnetic Poles.
