Well, on a Mac, a file previewer is built into the OS. I believe version 10.5 or higher has this feature. Just press the spacebar and you can easily preview documents, photos, etc. without actually opening it. As for PCs, at this point there really is no way to preview something without opening it. If your problem is a virus concern, just scan it individually with antivirus software. If you don't have antivirus software, try the free Avira Antivir program, or there are many sites you can upload the file to for individual scanning. If your problem has nothing to do with virus worries, I probably need more details on the issue to help you out.
There is no such mechanism. You're probably thinking of thumbnails, which are snapshots of a document reduced in size to be used as icons. However not all documents implement a thumbnail mechanism, and the snapshots are not really suitable for previewing documents other than image files. The low resolution of a thumbnail is only intended to provide a static indication of a file's content. A high resolution preview (like print preview) requires the document to be physically opened, even if only temporarily Behind the Scenes.
