The first course of action should be to place pressure on the bleeding to slow or stop it. Make sure emergency medical services have been summoned and continue to provide pressure on the wound until they arrive. If you cannot apply pressure to a wound because of a foreign object (i.e. a piece of glass), apply pressure just above and just below the wound (but still cover the wound area with gauze).

Step1-Pain sensors are triggered that a cut has happened.

Step2-Blood and Platelets clot the wound.

Step3-A scab forms.

Step4-Over time the scab will disappear.

Note: For large wounds, such as a shotgun wound, or dog bite will not have this process and require hospitalization.

  • Severe bleeding in limbs require using a tourniquet to stop a good deal of bleeding. You can use a belt, bathrobe tie belt, a pair of nylons or even a tee shirt piece torn from the hem of the tee shirt and perhaps a man's tie. If you have a pen or a stick you can use that to twist the tourniquet tightly. With a man's belt you pull tightly. Do not leave the tourniquet squeezed tightly for more than ten to fifteen minutes at a time. You must release the tension so the limb can get some blood and oxygen. Do the squeezing and releasing in a cycle or pattern. Place a sterile pad on the wound and press it down as an extra measure to stop the bleeding and to keep it from spreading all over the place. Call for emergency help. If you are not in a forest, it is a good idea to leave the patient in place and wait for the ambulance to arrive.
  • Scalps can bleed profusely. For a scalp wound it is necessary to take a sterile pad and press it hard on the wound. If you have wrap around bandages available then place a large, padded bandage on the wound then wrap the long bandage around the head to hold it in place until you can get to the emergency department.
  • Abdominal wounds are very serious. It is critical you call for emergency help immediately. Take a large gaze pad or bandage or sterile tee shirt or towel and press it on the abdominal wound. Do not press to hard and cause internal damage and more bleeding Do not move the victim.
  • If you are in a forest try to reach help with your cell phone. If you cannot get coverage you will have to leave the patient in place, have the patient hold the pressure bandage in place. Run to get help. Don't forget which way you ran to get help. Leave things along the path if you are not good at remembering forest or even desert pathways.
  • Face and mouth wounds need pressure. Use a gauze pad or sterile tee shirt or towel. If the mouth has lost teeth try to find the teeth and put them into a glass of milk or a ziploc bag with milk if available. You can use a cold wet sterile washcloth on the bleeding gums or mucosa of the mouth.
  • Small Children will freak out from the pain and the blood. Calm the child down as best as you can. If the child can be moved (based on the guidelines above) then hug and rock the child. Singing sometimes helps. The child may fight you as you try to treat the wound. Don't be afraid to gently put your knee on his or her arms or legs if the child is fighting you. Don't crush them. If someone else is around have them hold the child. Let the child know some nice people are coming to help him or her. If it is safe to move him you can drive him or her if you have another person to sit with the child. Don't drive a child to the hospital if you are alone. Call an ambulance. There have been children who opened the car door and tried to get out when there was only one adult, (who is the driver). Pegalita, medical administrator

If it is a minor cut, and not to much bleeding, we give first aid. If first aid kit is available, we clean the wound with spirit then put an aseptic (sterlized) plaster or film-tape. If the wound is severe and bleeding continues, we press on the wound, and call for medical help!

What is the proper procedure if a patient shows up at your office bleeding?

That all depends on how much the patient is bleeding. If they are bleeding really bad then you would have to stitch, staple, or glue the patient's wound up after cleaning the blood off first. Now if the patient is bleeding but not loosing a lot of blood, then you would clean the wound and around the wound and then put a band-aid on the wound.
