For first and second degree burns(redness and blisters), you can run the burn under cool water. You can also apply an ice pack or some Aloe Vera gel/spray. For third and electrical burns(charred/burned skin), you call 911. Then you cover the burn with a sterile bandage. DO NOT apply ointments, gels, or creams. DO NOT run under water or apply ice. DO NOT attempt to remove the clothing from affected area.
First, make sure the temperature of the burn is reduced to something that isn't dangerous. If the burn is still hot (pretty much any temp over about 109F roughly), more damage many occur, so the first step is making sure the burn isn't worsening. Do this by immersing the burned area in cool water, icepacking or wet-packing, etc. Time is of the essence in this part of the treatment. If the area burned is large (30% of the body surface or more), treat for shock and the potential of internal hypothermia, as the increased circulation brings blood flow to the skin in order to heal it, and radiates heat, thus potentially reducing core temp. By definition, 1st degree burns don't break the skin, so dehydration is not a major danger in this scenario. Once the aforesaid matters are attended to, moisturizing creams, aloe, and topical anesthetics may all play a part in the palliative treatment of the burned area.
