I think the oldest projectile to be fired was around the 4th century when the Japanese used a crude form of black powder to shoot a stone out of a bamboo chute. Think of it as a cannon you held in your hand, as it had a wick you had to light to set of the charge. The Chinese discovered black power in the 8th century, which spawned the use of cannons in the western world in about the 12th century

Guns first came about in the 13th century from a country called China. It was not until 1818 that the first fully operation gun was ever made and fired. The guns reliability when used in action was not considered reliable but it was the start of the first fully operational guns.
