According the the Cinema Treasures webite, here are the oldest movie theatres on the southwest side that I know of and the year they opened: Marquette Theater - 1917 (at 63rd and Kedzie) Colony Theater - 1926 (at 59th and Kedzie) Brighton Theater - 1929 (in Brighton Park on Archer Ave.) Ramova Theater - 1929 (at 35th and Halsted)
Because the first films were "silent". Thus when you went to the cinema to see them there was a live organist in the cinema who played music to accompany the film showing. This enriched the experience of the audience.
The difference between Television drams and Cinema film is that the Cinema film is designed for the big screen and therefore they shoot the scene with a wide angle camera in order to show a lot more in each frame.
