In The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen, Jews arriving to the train station saw the baskets, bags, and other possessions that families were forced to set down and leave. This was a foreboding warning sign, for no persons would ever willingly leave their personal possessions behind, so something bad had to have happened to them.

In real life, as well, Jews arriving at the Auschwitz concentration camp would see "snow" falling. But it was an odd snow; something was not right. Jews would later understand the "snow" resulted from burning the corpses of other Jews in great big incinerators.
