In Australia the flags that we use across the country is a red and yellow striped horizontal flag that marks the safest area to swim on the beach.
There are also additional flags that we use:
- Red and White diagonal divided flag - indicates an emergency situation and no one should enter the water.
- Orange- used for signalling water craft (people on boards or in boats who are part of surf lifesaving) when radio's arent working or aren't available.
There are other flags used by clubs to show their specific club for competition also, but there are thousands of surf clubs all over the country and many more around the world.

surf life saving did not "come" to Australia, the Australian beach go'ers actually started the movement and become the first country to be recognised for its beach culture and surf life savers who patrol the beach on the weekends and public holidays when the population on the beach is increased dramatically,

It is a multifaceted movement that comprises key aspects of voluntary lifeguard services and competitive surf sport.
Before the yellow and red flags were introduced the flags used to be white and blue. Scuba diving flags are also blue and white. Red and white is a shark flag. I have been on patrol for over 10 years, we have never used a blue and white flag.

As of my last update, there are over 300 surf life saving clubs in Australia, which play a crucial role in beach safety and community engagement. These clubs are part of Surf Life Saving Australia, an organization dedicated to protecting beachgoers through education, patrolling, and rescue services. The number may vary slightly as new clubs are established or others are consolidated, but they are a vital part of coastal safety efforts in the country.
