There are three forms you can have a N-number. One way is N then one-five numbers (N12345). The second way is N then one-four numbers followed by one letter (N1234A). The last way is N then one-three numbers followed by two letters (N123AB). Also a N-number may not begin with zero after the N. For example N03452 is not valid. N-numbers N1-N99 are reserved for the FAA.

Aircraft are required to be registered with the FAA and a registration number is assigned to it. Each country uses a different Letter in their registration and the US uses the "N" as the first letter. Canada aircraft use CY. England uses K----I believe.

What does the N stand for in airplane registration?

It stands for United States of America. Every country in the world has its own one or two letter prefix for tail numbers on aircraft registered in that country. The prefix for the USA is N. I don't know why N. I don't know who (if anyone) is in charge of assigning the codes. I think the N is because it's for North America, and the southern american countries all have their own letters. I suppose, initially, the various civil air administrators of all countries would have decided together what they would display on their aircraft. FAA in America, CAA in UK etc. F= France G= UK C-F & C-G= Canada D= Germany You could probably google the full list.

What is the purpose of airplane tail numbers?

Every aircraft is built to specific regulations and must be certified by the FAA. Each aircraft is then identified by a Regisration Number or the Tail Number. The aircraft will have an official document, usually mounted on a wall in the cockpit or just outside of it, that identifies the aircraft as having been certified for a specific type. This will identify the aircraft type which provides information as to the gross weight that it will operate. The tail number must be displayed so an observer can identify the aircraft. This helps people report an aircraft that is violating flight rules or help identify it for other reasons. Most operators of large passenger airlines, paints a portion of the Tail Number (usually 3 numberals or alpha characters) on the Nose Landing Gear doors. This allows the ground crew to easily see the tail number. The first Letter of the Tail Number identifies the country of origin where the aircraft is registered. "N" is used for all aicraft in the USA. "G" is used for aircraft registered in Canada.
