Lorentz contraction, or length contraction, coresponds to following formula:
l = l0 * sqrt(1-V2/c2)
255 miles is 255 miles - whatever the speed. At least until you get to Lorentz contraction which kicks in due to relativity when you are travelling close to the speed of light. At 35 mph the Lorentz contraction is less than a quadrillionth so probably less than the measurement error.
Not sure what you mean, but the Lorentz Contraction is most definitably measurable, with instruments available in a college lab. Either this contraction is occuring OR our Earth is moving through space with a velocity of less than three meters per second.
from a purely mathematical stand point, if something were to reach the speed of light the time dialation/length contraction formula would yield something over 0. This is beacuse the formula is: constant/[(1-(velocity/speed of light)^2] as you can see, if velocity=speed of light, you get something over zero.
Pare Lorentz's birth name is Leonard McTaggart Lorentz.
It is due to Einstein's theory of special relativity. If an observer views an object that is moving relative to him then it undergoes a length contraction. This is known as the Lorentz contraction. The contraction is by a factor of sqrt(1 - v2/c2) where v is the relative velocity between the observer and the object and c is the velocity of light.
