DNA does for a plant the same as for an animal - it allows two plants to share their genetic structure when they procreate.

Just like with animals, having many different DNA structures in a community makes the chances of diseases or defects affecting the entire race a lot lower. So because of this, each plant donates half their DNA, so the "child plant" has a mix of DNA from both.
