Almost every company needs some sort of receptionist to help stay organized. Receptionists are employees who greet people as they enter a place of business, whether it is an upscale corporate office or the noisy waiting room of a children’s hospital. Receptionists are often seated behind a desk and sometimes behind an enclosed space with a sliding window. They sometimes keep track of visitors by having them sign into a visitors’ log. Since they are usually the first person that visitors see, it is important that receptionists always look presentable, show punctuality and are able to get along with all types of people.

Receptionists tend to get hired in large part because of their personalities. Since they come into contact with various types of visitors all day long, they must be well-spoken, polite, nicely dressed and have a friendly, helpful attitude at all times. Receptionists also answer phones and transfer calls. A nice speaking voice and the ability to calmly handle high-volume calls on multi-line phones are both skills that hiring managers are looking for when it comes to this position.

The ability to stay highly organized is also a part of being a good receptionist, as they often must keep track of various people’s schedules, take messages, check people in and out and book appointments. Sometimes receptionists will handle money also, serving as a cashier when people pay for services, for example a doctor’s visit. Other receptionist duties may include filing, making copies and typing documents. Receptionists also may become proficient in various computer programs, such as Microsoft Excel. They may be required to learn how to run a fax machine, turn building alarms on and off and help with inventory. Sometimes they are in charge of making the morning coffee.

Depending on the company, requirements for a receptionist can be anywhere from no experience to several years of experience. Some places are willing to train, while others want someone who has already developed receptionist skills. Despite certain companies wanting experienced workers, almost everyone will pay their receptionist more than minimum wage. On average, receptionists make around $30,000 annually.
