a very helpful function

Answer

Batteries are essential components in a substation. They provide the (tripping) current by which protective relays can trip high-voltage circuit breakers in the event of a fault. This means that the circuit breakers can trip even if the substation itself has lost its ancillary AC power supply.

Batteries supply power when AC sources are not available. They're used for the same reason you might use a UPC (which includes a battery) to power you computer or other critical equipment. When AC sources fail, equipment in substations still need to be able to operate to protect the power system.
