Blood clotting is basically your bodys response to a breach in the skin or tissue. Think of it like a shield. If you get a cut and bleed not only does your body need to stop bleeding but it also needs to prevent infection. So it releases a chemical, a sort of webbing to trap blood platelets and stick together thus making a scab for example.

A blood clot normally forms to stop active bleeding (internal or external). Without blood clotting a small cut could result in bleeding out large volumes of blood--resulting in fatality. The clotting cascade is normally triggered by trauma.
