Best Answer

A chickens comb and wattles are used to both cool the bird and attract a mate. Blood comes very close to the surface at these areas and helps cool the bird down. Chickens do not sweat but they do pant. They also use dust baths to help keep cool.

Are you sure the others are hens? Usually the cockerels wattle and comb grows in much quicker than the hens but hens of the same breed and brood usually grow at the same rate. The hen you are comparing it to may be a late hatch chick and is less healthy.

Do you have to decomb a chicken?

It only depends on the type of chicken you have and in what area you live in. If you live in states with very cold winters and the chickens have large combs, then it should be decombed to stop frost bite. NO You do not have to remove a chickens comb and you should not. Removing the comb off a chicken is absolutely not necessary, anywhere. The comb has two functions. The primary function of the comb is to cool the chicken down in the summer. It is like a small radiator and blood flows close to the surface of the comb, air passing over the comb will remove some of the radiated heat and cool the blood as it passes through. Chickens do not sweat, taking off the comb would be like covering yourself in plastic wrap and sitting in the hot sun. The other function for the comb is to attract a mate. A healthy comb on either gender indicates potentially good genetic quality recognized by potential mates.

Can a rooster live with out its comb?

Yes, both hens and rooster develop combs and wattles. The roosters often have large one's but the hens need them for cooling as much as the cockerels. Combs and wattle provide an area on the bird free of feathers and allows blood to flow close to the surface of the skin and better able to utilized cool air to cool off the blood. Chickens do not sweat, they pant and use the comb and wattle to expel heat during those hot summer days.
