many uses! there are probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of applications that can utilize your microphone. probably the most notable use for a computer microphone would be for VoIP (Voice over internet Protocol) applications such as skype. However it can be used for many other things such as online games, and even recording.
A microphone can help in many ways. Like for example lets say you are talking with friends through Skype, msn etc... you can speak through the microphone but you can also talk without the microphone. Also some people download programs for lets say singing as an example if you use the microphone you get a better quality also it will most probably only record your voice instead of the voices in the background.
Having a microphone on your computer/laptop is not essential. Also most microphones come with a head set.

yes you can i think.
If the microphone has a USB plug, then plug it into the USB port on the computer. If the microphone has an audio plug, then plug it into the audio input port on the computer. If the microphone came with any software disks, then install those after plugging the microphone into the correct port on the computer.
Be smarter than the microphone. You click on the microphone button at the top left corner and it should be on. But it depends if you are using a laptop or desktop computer. If you are using a desktop computer there is no microphone. But if using a laptop, click on the microphone button on the top left corner. Then the microphone should turn on.

The difficulty of installing a computer microphone depends on the operating system of your computer. In most cases you can just plug the cable into your computer. Sometimes you have to manually install drivers for your microphone from a CD.
