Oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse through these pores. As the egg ages, more carbon dioxide enters the cell and the albumin becomes runny, the yolk flattens and may adhere to the inside of the shell, and the egg will have a stale taste. It is through these pores that bacteria enter the egg and it will become rotten and form the typical hydrogen sulfide smell of a rotten egg.
