Well, skeletal muscle (the kind you can contract voluntarily) is used to move your bones and help you move, keep your posture, etc. Smooth muscle on the other hand has numerous functions such as the relaxation and constriction of blood vessels or in peristalsis in the gastrointestinal tract.
