the optic chiasm is the cross-shape when some of the information from the left eye and right eye cross over and pass into opposite sides of the brain.

stereopsis is a binocular depth cue, the greater the difference between the view seen by the left and right eye the closer the viewer is looking.

since the image seen by both eyes is different it uses the optic chiasm to pass into both sides of the brain so it can be interpreted by the visual cortex.
