The ductus arteriosis (DA) is a normal part of the fetal circulation. It is a shunt (or a short vessel) that connects the pulmonary artery and descending aorta.

Functions of DA include:

  • Providing a channel for blood to bypass circulation to the lungs.
    • Explanation:
      • Since the fetus does not use his/her lungs, flow from the right ventricle needs an outlet.
      • The DA shunts the flow of blood from the left pulmonary artery to the aorta just beyond the origin of the artery to the left subclavian artery.
  • Distributing oxygen received through the placenta from the mother's blood.

As part of the normal physiology, the DA starts closing once the baby is born and the lungs inflate, establishing breathing. The DA us completely sealed after 4-10 days, separating the pulmonary and systemic circulations.

The main function of the ductus arteriosus is to allow blood flow from the right ventricle to bypass a fetus's nonfunctioning lungs. Once a child is born, this passage will close.

What infants could be injured by mechanical ventilation?

Newborns with patent ductus arteriosis, a handicap affecting the pulmonary artery, are more likely to suffer pulmonary hemorrhage from mechanical ventilation.

What do each of the 3 fetal bypasses actually bypass?

The Ductus arteriosis allows the oxygenated blood to bypass the non-functioning lungs by going straight from the right ventricle to the aortic arch, instead of going through the pulmonary artery. The Ductus Venosus allows half of the blood from the umbilical vein to be shunted to the inferior vena cava to bypass the babies liver. And the Foramen ovale lets blood go straight from the right atrium to the left atrium, the Ductus Arteriosis is a back up for when blood gets left behind. The foramen ovale closes over at birth to form the fossa ovalis.

It propels sperm into the urethra during ejaculation. "Ductus Deferens" is also called as "Vas Deferens"

What safety precautions should be taken when administering oxygen to infants?

Special care must be given when administering oxygen to premature infants because of the danger of high oxygen levels causing retinopathy of prematurity, or contributing to the construction of ductus arteriosis.

What adaptive advantage is gained by the ductus arteriosus' closure at birth in a fetal pig?

The ductus arteriosus closes at birth in pigs and becomes the ligamentum arteriosum. This allows the pulmonary artery to function properly.
