The function of the small intestine is to absorb nutrients from the food you eat. The function of the large intestine is to absorb water from the non-nutrient portions of the food you eat (waste) and to pass the waste materials to the anus for elimination.

The function of the intestine is to digest and absorb food. After the initial stages of digestion (chewing and soaking in digestive juices in the stomach) the food enters the small intestine where it is mixed with other digestive chemicals including enzymes. The large molecules of which the food is made are broken down into small, soluble ones. All the nutrients available are gradually absorbed through the intestine wall into the blood. In the large intestine the resultant mixture of bile acids and undigested food are collected and the water returned into the body. Bacterial digestion also occurs in the large intestine and is an important contribution to human nutrition. The intestine ends at the anus..

The function of the intestines is to aid with digestion of food. The intestines also transport the nutrients from the food into the blood stream and the waste out of the body.
In human anatomy, the intestine(or bowel, hoseor gut) is the segment of the alimentary canal extending from the pyloric sphincter of the stomach to the anus and, in humans and other mammals, consists of two segments, the small intestine and the large intestine. In humans, the small intestine is further subdivided into the duodenum, jejunum and ileumwhile the large intestine is subdivided into the cecum and colon.

By the time food reaches your small intestine, it has already been broken up and mashed into liquid by your stomach. Each day, your small intestine receives between one and three gallons of this liquid. The small intestine carries out most of the digestive process, absorbing almost all of the nutrients you get from foods into your bloodstream. The walls of the small intestine make digestive juices, or enzymes, that work together with enzymes from the liver and pancreas to do this.

Your large intestine is about five feet (or 1.5 meters) long. The large intestine is much broader than the small intestine and takes a much straighter path through your belly, or abdomen. Its job is to absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food, and get rid of any waste products left over. By the time food mixed with digestive juices reaches your large intestine, most digestion and absorption has already taken place. What's left is mainly fiber (plant matter which takes a long time to digest), dead cells shed from the lining of your intestines, salt, bile pigments (which give this digested matter its color), and water. In the large intestine, bacteria feed on this mixture. These helpful bacteria produce valuable vitamins that are absorbed into your blood, and they also help digest fiber.
