If you have data in C3:C15 and D3:D15 use the formula =Average(C3:C15).
Clicking on the Autosum button allows you to choose to put the SUM function into a cell, but also gives you a choice of other functions, such as MAX, MIN and AVERAGE.

Select the cells you want to get an average of. Go to the Autosum tool and click the little arrow beside it and pick Average from the list of options. It will automatically insert the formula into an adjacent cell, usually the cell below the figures you would have selected. You could also go to the cell where you want the result to be first and then click on the Autosum tool and pick Average. It will start the function and at that point you can select the range you want to get the average of, or type it in.
Autosum allows you to automatically insert the SUM function into a cell. It will then also automatically select a group of cells to add if there are cells with numbers in them nearby. If you do it at the bottom of a column of numbers, it will automatically select the ones above to sum and if you put it at the end of a row of numbers, it will automatically select the numbers in that row to sum. You still have the option of choosing a different range of cells to sum.
