I just installed a new pick up in my 78, the gap should be set at .008, that is 8 thousands of one inch. You MUST use a non metallic feeler gage, This means brass or copper. If you use a steal gage you will burn out the new pick up, because the pick up is magnetised. Make sure the pick up an the lobes on you distributor are parallel insert you non metallic feeler gage and move the pick up until you get your desired gap. To get the lobes on the distributor parallel you simply turn your fan clockwise while you apply pressure on the alternator belt. NOTE it is much easier to achieve this, if the distributor is out of the vehicle. The .008th gap is for a 318 engine. Good luck!
no points , has electronic ignition on a 1978
It should have an electronic distributor. So no points to adjust. 0.18
It has the HEI distributor in it."High Energy Ignition" and also called "High Energy Electronic Ignition"
On a ( 1978 ) Ford 302 cubic inch V8 engine : It has Electronic Ignition , so there are no points
There are kits available which turn your old points distributor into an electronic ignition system, i have converted both my veedubs and it removes all of the guesswork & trouble from your distributor. The kit comes with instructions and is very easy to use, you basically just gut your distributor cap & put in a circuit board & boom, electronic ignition. I will post a link below. Oh, and gap your plugs at .024 inches.
A 1992 318 distributor would have an electronic position sensor in it.
.016 as a reference
Spark Plug (ACDelco R45TS) [Gap @ .035” for points distributor, .045” for HEI distributor]
the pick up is inside the distributor
Civics from 1978 had points and a coil, not an ignition module. The points are inside the distributor, and the coil is the large cylinder with a fat, sparkplug-type wire leading from one of its ends to the center of the distributor. If you want to get rid of the points, etc, Pertronix makes an electronic ignition that hides inside the distributor. I've got one in my '75 civic, and it's awesome.
Depends on weather your referring to a modern vehicle with a fuel injection 327, or a classic car. Depends on if points or electronic ignition . An example being a 68 Chevy 327 with points type distributor I set the gap at .035 now same engine with electronic ignition HEI distributor Icap a bit larger a max of .045
