There are two paths

  1. pulmonary circulation- covers short distances as blood flows from heart to lungs trough pulmonary artery and returns back immediately through pulmonary vein.
  2. systemic circulation- blood is carried by aorta to all parts of the body and is brought back by pulmonary vein.

The systemic circulation starts from the left ventricle and ends in the right atrium. the blood which reaches the left ventricle through the pulmonary circulation goes through the aorta to the different body parts. then after gas exchange between cells, the impure blood returns to the right atrium through the superior and inferior vena cava.

Blood flows from the left atrium through the bicuspid valve and into the left ventricle. From there, it passes through the semilunar valve into the aorta, and is pumped through arteries of decreasing diameter until it reaches the capillaries. From the capillaris, the blood moves into veins of progressively larger diameter until it reaches the vena cava. At the end of the vena cava, the blood enters the pulmonary vascular system.
