If it is a chemical, flush it outwith water away from the other eye.
If it is a small grainy substance like sand, try flushing with water. If it doesn't work, call and wait for EMTs.
If it is a rock or other large object, DO NOT TOUCH IT. You may embed it further by trying to remove it. Unless you are a trained professional, don't try to get it out, you'll probably make it worse.
First of all, do NOT rub the eye as this could cause injury by scratching the surface of the eye. Gently flush the eye with water. If the object does not come out, use your fingertips to pinch the eyelashes of the upper lid, and gently pull it out and down over the lower lashes to attempt to brush the object out. If the object is in the lower part of the eye, grasp the eyelashes of the lower lid. Pull it out and up over the upper lashes.
If a few attempts at this, and flushing with water does not work, it would be advisable to seek professional medical attention.
