In ancient Egypt, there was supposedly a cat goddess named Bast, who was in the form of a Cat Woman. In fact, because there was a Cat Goddess, the people of Egypt worshiped cats for a long period of time. It was said that if somebody killed or attempted to hurt a cat, they would be sentenced to execution. If the family cat died, all the family members would grieve for days and even shave off their eyebrows.

Ancient Egyptian religion had many different goddesses with the head of a cat or a lion:

  • Bast (or Bastet - hieroglyphs bAstt) was a cat-headed goddess of the rising sun, the moon, physical pleasure, fertility, birth, households, music, dance, hemp and protector against snakes. She is seen in the earliest depictions with either the head of a lion or the Egyptian sand-cat.
  • Sekhmet (hieroglyphs sxmt) was the lion-headed goddess of sunset, destruction, death, rebirth and wisdom. Sometimes a warrior or huntress.
  • Mefdet (or Mafdet, hieroglyphs mAfdt) was a cat- or lion-headed goddess of justice and execution. Her cult is probably older than that of Bast.
  • Pakhet (or Pachet, hieroglyphs pAxt) "She Who Scratches", was lion goddess of the eastern desert and a night huntress.
  • Tefnet (hieroglyphs tfnt) was shown as a lioness or a cat-headed or lion-headed woman. Goddess of moisture, dew and rain.

There are other cat-headed goddesses, but these are probably the main ones.
