She becomes progressively more worried, trying to talk her way out of the situation, and becoming more and more convinced that she will die as well, even while saying the opposite. It is really a trial of faith for her, comparing tragedy to the way that she thought the world was supposed to work. In that comparison, and being faced with the reality of death, she has to find out what she really believes, and if her faith can hold up in the end.
