Various species of the black widow are found throughout North America.
Latrodectus Mactans or Southern Black Widow is found in the southeastern U.S. from Florida to the New England states.
Latrodectus Hesperus or western Black Widow are found in and around Mexico, South Western Canada and the Western States.
Latrodectus Variolus or Northern Black Widow ranges in Northeastern U.S and Southeastern Canada but overlap the Southern species.
Black widows [outside nature] are commonly found close to man-made objects. Generally, close to the ground in dry dark and (rain/wind) protected sites, situated in the paths of the insects they are feeding on (I sometimes also find them thriving close to lamps that attract insects - anyway they don't seem very demanding in where they build webs).
Some examples of places I find them:
Unused areas on and in shelves, cupboards or sheds.
Crevices in floors of garages, sheds, ect
Undersides of lawn furniture
Around boxes and other material stored in garages and sheds. [especially anything that has stood unused for long periods of time].
Check around such areas with a flashlight especially at night as this is when females are more conspicuous [they move to the center of their web at night].
They like to be close to the ground and under something like an overturned box. Humans make many ideal habitats for them by making things like the little sheds some people build over well pumps, attractive wooden covers for ugly old water meters or gas meters close to the foundations of houses, abandoned shipping cartons thrown in a corner of the back yard, etc., etc. When available, they also like the spaces under the seats of outdoor toilets. Those spaces fit the other requirements and on top of that there are probably always plenty of flies.

Black Widows sometimes like to hide in between SmallCorners and Such.
