Various "nonalcoholic" beers (O'doul's being the most common in my experience) contain only trace amounts of alcohol (0.01 - 0.5% ABV).

As for the highest ABV beer, an intriguing competition has been going on lately in that category between Scottish brewery BrewDog and German brewery Schorschbrau. The most recent "world'sr strongest beer" from each brewery have been Brewdog's Sink the Bismark! at 41% ABV, which was topped shortly thereafter by Schorschbrau's Schorschbock 43% (at 43% ABV). It's worth noting that these beers are now in an ABV range HIGHER THAN FULL PROOF LIQUOR (40%).

Is a 12 oz beer the same as a 1 oz shot?

As a general rule of thumb, yes. Although there are several factors that could change this answer. The alcohol content of the liquor you are using (80 proof, 90 proof, etc...) and the alcohol content of the beer you are comparing it to. Beer can range anywhere from 4% ABV to 15-16% ABV for most mainstream beers. There are however many beers that rise above event the 15-16% mark, I believe the beer with the highest ABV is currently around the 40% mark.

What is the difference in alcohol content between Lite beer and regular beer?

This largely depends on where you are. In the united states, "lite" beer usually refers to a low carbohydrate beer with an ABV (alcohol by volume) of around about 4.2%, compared to a standard heavy beer of around 5.0% ABV. The reduction in alcohol content is an incidental result of brewing a beer with less carbohydrates. In other places, light beer usually means a beer specifically brewed to be low alcohol, and these usually are about 2.5% ABV, about half the strength of a full strength beer.

Which is a typical range of alcohol for an alcoholic beverage?
