Montesquieu developed the principle he called "Trias Politica", namely that a good political system should consist of 3 powers, independent of each other but at the same time controlled by each other so that no single power could rule unchecked. The powers he defined were the executive power, the legislative power and the judicial power.


This system today has been adopted as the basis for good government by almost all Western democracies.
