The holiday was first introduced in Japan in 1936. The candy industry began making heart-shaped chocolates in 1953. In Japan, women give chocolate to all their male coworkers, with the men reciprocating a month later on what is known as "White Day."

A similar holiday has been celebrated in Japan for centuries, known as Tanabata. The holiday has no roots in the Judeo-Christian Valentine's Day, but the aims of celebrating love are similar.
