the late Mr Fred Mayes of Orewa, New Zealand claimed to have designed the first "BBQ"table in early 1960's made from 4x2 timber planks - 4 at 5'6" long for the top and 2 each side for the seats with 2 crosspieces for seat support to which were bolted the angled legs,2 braces from the seat support member to the table top centre provided bracing.
his design was simple yet strong as they were developed for public places. They had pairs of bolts at each leg connection which made the unit rigid unlike the many inferior copies since made which use one bolt and so nearly collapse when they carry an uneven load. He produced a 6x2 version to avert rigorous vandalism as well.
Originally produced by Mr Mayes' company Silverdale Wood products and sold assembled or in kitset form. He later changed the company name to "Maykit" and sold his products around the world.
