The history of the non alcoholic beverage service industry started in the 1940's with Bottling Industry magazine. In the 1950's the beverage industry was touted as the fabulous 50's, during the 60's the consumption of soft drinks really took off and was known as the swinging 60's. The 1970's saw Aspartame being added to soda with the sweetness being 200x that of sugar. By the 1980's, aspartame was the sweetener of choice and that decade became known as the energetic 80's. In the 1990's the beverage industry took a whole new turn with no artificial ingredients, and political correctness and was given the name the New Age 90's.
Increased travel in Europe in the 1500s caused the need for people away from home to get food and lodging, which brought the rise of food and beverage service, and also hotels. In the 1600s, coffee was introduced to Europe from Turkey, and the first coffee house was opened in Vienna in 1645. The first restaurant was opened in France in 1765, though there were already inns and public rooms that sold food to paying guests. When the French Revolution brought down the aristocratic houses, restaurants were opened by displaced kitchen employees. Fine dining halls and restaurants flourished in the 1700s.
In the United States during the San Francisco gold rush in 1849, a cafeteria style restaurant opened for the gold miners. Like cafeteria style restaurants of today, they allowed miners to choose their food and pay before sitting down to eat. The country's first diners and precursors to fast food restaurants opened by the beginning of the 1900s. The first McDonald's opened in Des Plains, Iowa in 1955, offering a limited menu and quick service. The food and beverage service industry is now the largest employer of the private sector, and it continues to get larger every year.
