The original Allegheny Valley Railroad (AVRR) was formed in 1853, and it was constructed to transport oil from Oil Creek and Titusville to market. (Oil was first drilled there in 1859, and this began the modern petroleum age.) There are a number of historical societies with "holdings" that speak to the formation and evolution of the AVRR, and more than a few model railroad clubs in the area have documentation.
