In the early 1900's in Aurora, Illinois there was a Richard's Manufacturing Company that later merged with the Wilcox Manufacturing Company. They made tools like an adjustable wrench, similar to the crescent wrench of today. There was a Thomas Skillin that worked here as a designer, but his name was never on the company letterhead.

The W. Richards shotguns were mainly made in Belgium. They were an attempt by Sears Roebuck Company to cash in on the well known English gunmaker Westley Richards, but have no connection to the Westley Richards Company. There were listed in the Sears catalogs from the late 1890s and early 1900s.

Many "Richards" branded shotguns in the late 1800s and early 1900s imported to U.S. from Europe. Some high value Westley Richards guns were made in England, other rather valueless English and Belgian guns came over also. Be careful not to shoot these without inspection by a gunsmith.
The guns sold under the name W. Richards were low cost firearms, mainly made in Belgium, that attempted to cash in on the name of the well known English gun maker, Westley Richards. They were not related to the Westley Richards company. They were listed in the Sears Roebuck catalogues in the early 1900s. Something like buying a watch that says "ROLUX"....not the same as a ROLEX.
