What is the history of the ukulele?
The ukulele was developed in Hawaii about 1880, based on
instruments brought from Portugal.
The 'ukulele' is generally traced to 1879 with the arrival of Portuguese laborers from the island of Madeira. They brought with them an instrument called the machete, which became the 'ukulele'. By 1884, Augusto Dias was advertising as a luthier in the Honolulu City Directory. It was popularized on the US mainland at the Pan-Pacific Expo of 1916, held in San Francisco.
In general, it is difficult to show major affects of something like an ukulele on society. However, the ukulele has a defined history and known origin. It was adapted quickly by the Hawaiian Royal Family and became a unique part of their culture. The state song and many other songs written by them are associated with the islands and it is difficult to portray Hawaii without incorporating the sounds of this instrument.
The history is well documented. The arrival of Portuguese immigrants to Hawaii in the late 1880's was the event that sparked the creation of the ukulele. Based on the native instruments that they brought with them, they made a new type of instrument from the native woods and materials available in the islands.
