The shape of S. America & Africa appear as though they could roughly fit together like jigsaw pieces. There are also other land areas which have similar characteristics. People have therefore concluded (probably correctly) that the surface of the Earth was once one large contiguous area.
Another interesting idea to consider is that some people claim all of the land area of the Earth is actually an island which floats on a molten layer below the surface of the Earth.
a continental theory
This single landmass was the supercontinent of Pangea. They separated due to continental drift.
Africa is the only continent to be a part of all four hemispheres.
Pengaea(plate tectionic)- hypothetical continent including all the landmass of the earth prior to the Triassic period when it split into....
Africa is the only continent to be a part of all four hemispheres.
Europe and Asia are both a part of Eurasia.Even larger, Africa, Europe, and Asia are all a part of Afroeurasia.
The US is not a continent because it is only a country and not a major landmass on the Earth. Mexico, Canada and all of Central America is part of that landmass too.
continental drift :D
A prehistoric super continent where all of Earth's landmass was contained.
a continental theory
Yes it is, though not all subcontinents are huge landmasses. India, for example.
It is actually the name of the super continent - when all the continents were one landmass.
This single landmass was the supercontinent of Pangea. They separated due to continental drift.
The 'supercontinent' that contained all the land-masses on earth was called Pangaea.
All are component nations of the continent of Europe. Only France and Germany however are part of the contiguous European landmass. England as a country is a component of the island of Great Britain but is economically and politically associated with the continent of Europe as a principle member of the European Union.
continental drift
If you take a map and cut out all the Continent, you can see that they fit together almost perfectly, like a giant puzzle. This idea supports the fact that all the continents were connected in one large landmass.
