A person may be "sectioned" (unvoluntarily admitted) for assessment for up to 28 days. An order can be made under this section provided two doctors approve. At least one of these must have known the patient prior to admission. Exceptions to this rule can still result in emergency admission. Knowing the patient usually means having them under your care in capacity of GP.

Treatment (i.e. medication) can be administered without a patient's consent provided they are judged to be incapacitated to do so and the administration of such is in the patients best interests.

Section 2 of the Mental Health Act 1983: http://www.statutelaw.gov.uk/content.aspx?LegType=All+Legislation&title=&parentActiveTextDocId=1729080&ActiveTextDocId=1729087&filesize=2464

As well as two doctors recommending admission an approved mental health professional or the nearest relative must agree it is the most appropriate thing to happen. If they do not agree with the doctors you cannot be sectioned. Under section 2 medication can be given even if the patient has capacity . There is a right of appeal to the Tribunal and Hospital Managers
