The front desk of the hotel is a lot like the brain. The people of the front desk of larger hotels may have more limited responsibilities (i.e. some responsibilities may be taken over by other departments), but the front desk largely run the day-to-day business of the hotel.

The front desk is responsible for answering most phone calls into the hotel, and all of the calls from the guest rooms. They make reservations, check people in, check people out, direct housekeeping and houseman efforts, call in maintenance and security, manage meeting rooms and banquets, answer questions, address guests' concerns and much more.

Hotel, motel, and resort desk clerks are the first line of customer service for a lodging property. They register arriving guests, assign rooms, and answer guests' questions on hotel services and other matters. At other times, they check out guests and report problems with guest rooms or public areas to the housekeeping or maintenance staff. Night and weekend work is common and approximately 1 in 4 desk clerks works part time.

Most hotel, motel, and resort desk clerks learn their job through short-term on-the-job training, which describes their job duties, familiarizes them with the hotel's facilities, and provides instruction on how to use the computerized reservation, room assignment, and billing systems. Postsecondary education is not required for this job, but some background or coursework in hospitality is helpful. Most importantly, employers look for people who are friendly and customer-service oriented, well groomed, and display maturity and good judgment.

How do you invite guests in hotel?

* You should always let the desk clerk at the front desk of the hotel know you are expecting a FEW guests to your room and also ask about the policies of the hotel regarding guests. Then contact your guests and give them your room number. Generally the front desk of the hotel will phone up to your room and announce your guest or guests have arrived. If the guests already have a room in the hotel and you know their names then ask the front desk of the hotel for their room number so you can contact them, and if this is not possible then leave notes to each guest and hand them to the desk clerk.
